your eyes glisten
like rocks in rivers
wading beneath the water
catching pieces of light
as we slide in and out
of where we were
in days where everything
seemed to make sense
i awaken into
a kind of lifelessness
broken in places
i could never quite name
a sensation that sits
somewhere beneath the skin
and i find you here
where i thought i left you
between these rocks
between this life
and everything that came before
i thought i’d never see you again
but your eyes
they seem to glow in the dark
like something the night
could never fully hide
and i can find you in ways
i never thought i could
in the movement of water
in the quiet between sounds
in places i stopped
looking for you
i touch you
like i want you
like i could have you
like i had you
like time could fold
for just a moment
and place us somewhere
we already knew
but those days are gone
and the wind
it keeps blowing
through everything we left
and i’m flying
far from where i held you
far from the version of myself
that thought staying
meant never having to leave
and you seem to glide
with the water
carried somewhere
i cannot follow
while i move with the wind
and we go
in different directions
still beneath the same sky
still touching the same earth
without ever meeting there
i leave you here
in the ether
in where i could
in where i can
in where we did
in the space between
having and remembering
where the river keeps moving
and the rocks remain
holding pieces of light
long after the water
has passed
